Of Wenceslaus and Agnes's six known sons, their fourth, Johann Nowotny, is my great-great grandfather. Photos of him and his wife, Minna Tausch, have been up in my home since I was a child, and their faces are as familiar to me as any family member. However, only recently have I discovered the pictures of Johann in later life and the one of his little home in New Braunfels.
My favorite family story of Johann has to do with his short career as a Texas Ranger. He served from October 1870 to April 1870 in Companies L and G of the Frontier Forces under Capt. H.R. von Biberstein (Vera Patton Nowotny). According to family legend, his ranging days were cut short after he lost an eye in a fight with an Indian. While I can't confirm the story, a close look at the profile shot at the bottom is certainly suggestive!
